Yoga Exercises to Lose Weight

Yoga is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of weight loss, although it is one of the most effective techniques to a slim new you. Yoga has been around for centuries and is by far, one of the oldest methods of exercise. In fact, calling it just an exercise would be undermining its essence. Yoga is a comprehensive system, designed to synchronize the mind, body, and spirit.
Yoga exercises are great for toning and strengthening the body. The initial weight loss may not be apparent in overt ways or on the scale. However, you will feel a difference in your energy levels, your posture and above all the way your clothes feel. It’s an indescribable feeling when clothes feel looser, because that’s a telltale sign of a leaner body. Yoga aims at increasing the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), toning, firming and rejuvenating the mind and the body. It is a complete exercise routine to achieve guaranteed results.

Deep Squats: Done like regular squats with one modification. In yogic squats you lower the body down all the way to the ground before coming back up.
Dwichkrikasan or Prone Cycling: Lie down with your hands on by your side side. Raise your legs to 90 degrees. Point your toes away from the body till you feel the stretch behind your knee. Then begin cycling in the air with alternate legs, ensuring that you make complete circles in the air. This exercise can be done with both the legs together for maximum effect.
Padvrutasan: Lie down with your hands to the side. Lift one leg to 30 degrees and make circles in the plane perpendicular to the body. Make 15 circles in the clockwise and 15 circles in the anti-clockwise direction. Repeat with the other leg. This exercise can be done with both the legs together.
Ardha Halasan or Half Plough: Lie down with your hands at your sides. Lift both your legs to 90 degrees. Breathe in and lower both the legs to 30 degree. Exhale while bringing them back to 90 degree position. Keep repeating for 30 counts or more.
In addition to these exercises, the Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation) is extremely beneficial for overall body toning and strengthening. It is a complete exercise in itself; a series of 12 poses done sequentially. Each pose must be held for at least 5 counts. Individual poses can be held longer for more benefits to a particular part.
Breathing exercises done along with yoga exercises speed up the weight loss process and help burn fat effectively. Breathing correctly ensure that every cell of your body receive ample oxygen. Oxygen is a fat burner, the more you breathe and breathe deep, the more fat you burn.
Kapal Bhati Pranayama, Anulom Vilom, Bhastrika Pranayama, and the Breath of Fire are some of the breathing exercises that help with reducing fat levels, and regulating the endocrine, respiratory, circulatory, and the digestive system.
